Equipment

  • large bowl
  • Skillet
  • Baking dish
  • Rolling Pin

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

For the Sauce and Cheese

  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

For the Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Step‑by‑Step Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, basil, egg, and breadcrumbs. Use your hands to mix until everything is well incorporated. Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs, ensuring they're compact yet tender. Set aside.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until browned on all sides.
  • Transfer the browned meatballs to a baking dish, pour marinara sauce over them, and sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets until they are flat and cut into a circle large enough to cover the meatball mixture.
  • Carefully place the puff pastry over the meatball and sauce mixture. Tuck the edges of the pastry down around the meatballs.
  • Bake the dish in your preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and flaky.
  • Once baked, let the dish cool for a few minutes, invert the baking dish onto a serving platter, and serve warm.

Notes

Making meatballs in advance can save time. Choose a high-quality marinara sauce for the best flavor.
