Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine 300 g of all-purpose flour, 60 g of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add in 220 g of cold, cubed unsalted butter, mixing until you achieve a coarse crumb texture. Gradually incorporate 2.5 tablespoon of cold water until the dough forms, then shape it into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 75 g of unsalted butter. To the skillet, add the sliced apples, 110 g of brown sugar, 1¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon salt, and 2.5 tablespoon of water. Stir well and cook for about 10–12 minutes. The apples should be tender but not overly mushy; remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  • Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F) to prepare for baking. On a floured surface, roll out half of the chilled dough to fit your pie dish. Transfer the rolled dough into the dish, trimming any excess that hangs over the edges. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of almond flour evenly over the bottom to help absorb moisture from the filling before pouring in the cooled apple mixture.
  • Roll out the remaining dough for the top layer. You can either cut it into decorative strips for a lattice finish or simply cover the pie with a full crust. If using a full crust, remember to crimp the edges to seal in that scrumptious apple filling.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the top of your pie crust for that beautiful golden color. Finally, sprinkle some brown sugar on top for added sweetness and a delightful crunch when baked.
  • Bake the Apple Pie à la Mode in your preheated oven for approximately 50–60 minutes. Look for a golden-brown crust and bubbling filling as cues for doneness. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil to prevent burning. Once golden, remove from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes.
  • Slice the warm apple pie and serve each generous slice topped with creamy vanilla ice cream. The combination of the flaky crust, tender apples, and cold ice cream makes for an irresistible dessert experience that will delight both you and your loved ones.

Notes

Ensure your butter is very cold for a flaky crust. Mix sweeter apples with tart ones for balanced flavor. Sprinkle almond flour to prevent a soggy bottom.
