Instructions
Step-by-Step Instructions
Dry the Bread: Spread the cubed bread evenly on a large cookie sheet and allow to dry out for about an hour.
Prepare the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until creamy and frothy.
Layer the Bread: Grease a baking pan and arrange half of the dried bread cubes. If not using meat, spread all bread cubes.
Add Meat (Optional): Sprinkle half of the cooked and diced meat evenly on the bread layer, then place remaining bread cubes on top.
Pour the Custard Mixture: Pour the custard over the bread cubes and press down gently to ensure maximum absorption.
Refrigerate Overnight: Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate preferably overnight.
Preheat the Oven: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Add Cinnamon Sugar: Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
Bake to Perfection: Bake for 60 to 70 minutes until top is lightly browned and a toothpick comes out clean.
Finish and Serve: Dust with cinnamon sugar if desired, cut warm squares, and serve with maple syrup.
Notes
Use stale or dried bread for best texture. Let the casserole soak overnight for best results.
