Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions for Char Siu Chicken

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Whisk until well blended.
  • Place chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal and shake to coat.
  • Marinate chicken in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight.
  • After marinating, let the chicken sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Pre-line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Place marinated chicken thighs on the baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  • While baking, pour reserved marinade into a saucepan, bring to boil, then simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  • Brush the thickened marinade over each thigh, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes until slightly charred.
  • Remove chicken from the oven, let it rest for a few minutes, slice, and serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

For best results, marinate the chicken for at least 4 hours, and serve with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables.
