Ingredients

  • 1 pound Puff pastry thawed

For the Filling

  • 1 pound Italian sausage mild or spicy
  • 2 medium Onions finely sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter for caramelizing
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil to prevent burning
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese shredded

  • 1 beaten egg Egg for egg wash
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add 2 sliced onions and sauté for about 20 minutes until caramelized.
  • Stir in 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme, 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  • In another skillet, cook 1 pound of Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain and let cool.
  • Combine the cooled sausage and onion mixture in a bowl, then add 1 cup of shredded Gruyère cheese and mix well.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry and cut into rectangles of about 4 inches by 6 inches.
  • Place a spoonful of the sausage and onion mixture on one end of the rectangle.
  • Fold the pastry over the filling and seal the edges with a fork.
  • Brush the tops of the rolls with 1 beaten egg.
  • Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let the sausage rolls cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Ensure to seal the rolls well to prevent the filling from leaking. They can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
