Instructions

Step‑by‑Step Instructions

  • Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes.
  • Add 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, and brown for 5-7 minutes until no longer pink.
  • Stir in ½ cup of finely chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.
  • Add 2 cloves of minced garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Pour in 28 ounces of crushed tomatoes and stir in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, cooking for about 2 minutes.
  • Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon each of dried oregano and dried basil, and ½ teaspoon each of salt and black pepper. Optionally add sugar and red pepper flakes.
  • Add ¼ cup of water or beef broth to adjust consistency and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Reduce heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
