Instructions
Step-by-Step Instructions
Begin by peeling and chopping the large russet potatoes into roughly 2-inch chunks. Place the potato pieces into a large pot filled with salted water, bringing it to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Keep an eye on the pot, as this will take about 5–7 minutes.
Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and let the potatoes cook for 15–20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. To check, insert a fork into a piece; it should easily break apart. After the potatoes are cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander and return them to the warm pot.
Add the heavy cream, melted butter, salt, and pepper to the drained potatoes in the pot. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy, with no lumps. This should take about 2–3 minutes.
Using a skull mold, carefully pack the mashed potato mixture tightly into the shapes. If you don’t have a mold, you can shape the potatoes by hand into skull forms.
Slice the black olives into small circles to create eerie eyes. Press one or two slices into each potato skull.
For an extra touch, finely chop some fresh chives or green onions and sprinkle them over the skull potatoes for a nice color contrast. Serve these Spooky Skull Potatoes warm.
Notes
Ensure potatoes are fork-tender before mashing. Under-cooked potatoes won't give that creamy texture desired in Spooky Skull Potatoes. Experiment with spooky shapes using cookie cutters if desired.
