Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Potato Masher
  • skull mold
  • colander

Ingredients

For the Skull Shape

  • 4 large russet potatoes A starchy variety perfect for achieving that creamy texture.
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream This adds rich flavor and a velvety smoothness to the potatoes.
  • 0.25 cup butter melted for an extra buttery taste that elevates the dish's indulgence.
  • Salt to taste, essential for enhancing the overall flavor of the mashed potatoes.
  • Pepper to taste, a touch of spice to balance the creaminess.

For Decoration

  • Black olives Ideal for crafting spooky eyes and mischievous mouths on your skull potatoes!
  • Fresh chives or green onions An optional garnish that adds a pop of color and freshness.

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Begin by peeling and chopping the large russet potatoes into roughly 2-inch chunks. Place the potato pieces into a large pot filled with salted water, bringing it to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Keep an eye on the pot, as this will take about 5–7 minutes.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and let the potatoes cook for 15–20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. To check, insert a fork into a piece; it should easily break apart. After the potatoes are cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander and return them to the warm pot.
  • Add the heavy cream, melted butter, salt, and pepper to the drained potatoes in the pot. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy, with no lumps. This should take about 2–3 minutes.
  • Using a skull mold, carefully pack the mashed potato mixture tightly into the shapes. If you don’t have a mold, you can shape the potatoes by hand into skull forms.
  • Slice the black olives into small circles to create eerie eyes. Press one or two slices into each potato skull.
  • For an extra touch, finely chop some fresh chives or green onions and sprinkle them over the skull potatoes for a nice color contrast. Serve these Spooky Skull Potatoes warm.

Notes

Ensure potatoes are fork-tender before mashing. Under-cooked potatoes won't give that creamy texture desired in Spooky Skull Potatoes. Experiment with spooky shapes using cookie cutters if desired.
